Harmony nodded at Caleb’s answer. “They sound like the perfect match. Greedy and shallow. No offence.” she smiled over at him a bit. “But they definitely aren’t the worst. Take Hitler, take Kony, take Stalin. That’s true evil.” She got a little philosophical when tipsy. Hopefully he wouldn’t mind. “They don’t sound all that pleasant though. The best thing to probably do is kill them with kindness.” Why was she advising him, or whatever she was doing? Giving a suggestion on how to deal? She couldn’t even deal with her overprotective parents half the time. She just avoided them and ignored them until they went away. She didn’t even rebel in the usual way. She drank, but it was legal. She went to clubs, but they were with large groups and she didn’t do inappropriate things. She didn’t do drugs or smoke or participate in dangerous activities. But her parents weren’t something that she wanted to think about and she was grateful when Caleb asked her another question.
“I feel like we’re playing twenty questions.” she said, smiling lazily. “I haven’t really thought about why I stayed in my room, but I guess that early on I just thought that I was fine with my muggle friends. Like, I didn’t need to make more friends because I had some of my own and I was going to stay out of drama here. Well, I did stay out of drama, but I also got super lonely. There was one year where I had a kinda bad breakup and I didn’t really have anyone to talk to here, and that was when I realized that I needed to start talking to others. And a year and some months later that goal has finally been achieved” she said proudly. “As for why I stay in now? I still like avoiding drama. I don’t want to be the cause of something going around the rumor mill and now that Peeves is out and about things are going around faster than ever. I’m also pretty much always reading when I’m in there” she explained. She looked at him, lounging peacefully on his bed, and wished that she could lay down too. It looked comfortable and she was actually pretty tired. But no, she was going to stay up talking to him and then make her way to her own dormitory. “So, what is this I hear about bad-boy days?” she asked a bit sarcastically as she tucked her legs up beneath her. She had heard random stuff from him and others about how he had been a wild-child for a while, but didn’t know any of the specifics. She was curious to find out, though.
“Or you know, I could just kill them.” Caleb joked He would never really kill his parents but the thought crossed his mind. Caleb knew what it was like to be a recluse. For his first three years at Hogwarts he was pretty much a nerd. He didn’t talk much and kept to his books, hanging around very few people if any. It was far from the person he was now. Caleb missed the simple times, life was so easy back then. Caleb chuckled at the memory of himself, skinny, short with his nose in a book. It was almost like looking at another person’s memory. “I don’t blame you for it. There is a lot of drama to be found here.” For some reason, people cared more about other peoples business than their own or than their studies. Caleb had his own share of drama but he was trying so hard to move on from it. Somehow it always dragged him back in. Caleb knew that trouble would always find him, he was just unlucky that way but he also knew that he would never react to it the same way. His little list of people he wanted to protect kept growing and whenever he felt the need to stay from his path, he ran down that list in his head. It kept him going.
Caleb cleared his throat when Harmony asked about his past. He had been prying so much into hers that it made sense she would ask about his. ” Whatever you’ve heard is probably true.” Caleb admitted. ” I had my moments. They were fun while I was in them but they cost me a lot.” Caleb reflected on his past in his head. ” I can’t say that I would do it over you know? Knowing what I now, thinking about the things I missed out on, it just wasn’t worth it.” Caleb didn’t want to waste his second chance, he was behind in his classes, he lost most of his friends, he was disappointing himself now, more than anything. He tried hard to focus on what was right, but it wasn’t easy. He knew he had no one to blame but himself but he still had hope that it would get easier. ” I guess throughout the years I always relied on vices to get by. First books, then Quinn, then drugs, I never had much confidence in myself to think I could do it alone. I’m trying to change that now. I have a lot of people depending on me who I can’t let down again. One of those people is me.” Caleb bit his bottom lip hard to bring himself back to the present. The past was in the past, there was no use feeling back about what he can’t change. ” In short, I was a jackass but now I’m not.” he shrugged. ” Next question?”

Santana looked at the concoction handed out to her. Muggles were creative, Santana supposed, her hand coming to grip around the small iced glass. The liquid was almost ominous, pitch dark with just a sliver of white in the middle. Soda wasn’t a new concept to her, not at all, but the mixture in itself was odd. She’d never had time for a fitted muggle rundown, though she knew that a few of the other Slytherin patrons weren’t always jacked up on Firewhiskey or butterbeer. Hell, she’d experimented with more Hispanic like mixtures before, such as tequila and a few Spanish beers her brothers had stolen from before. But all in all, it was liquor and it definitely would calm her down. Bringing it up to her lips, Santana tasted the liquid, her tongue shifting out in slight distaste, though the warmth easily slipping through and calming all the unsettled anger that swirled inside of her whenever she saw Caleb’s face.
“I don’t care,” Santana told him honestly, placing her cup back down, fingers idly slipping over the rim in meticulous circles as she shrugged. “But I have—I have a girlfriend who fucking loves the shit out of you. I don’t know why, but she does, and that’s enough reason for me to be on this fucking chase.” Downing her drink, Santana figured, must have given her the courage to be so open, to honestly spew out words that stay hidden, and she isn’t surprised when the recounting of the event—the simple saying of the word girlfriend—causes a smile to form. “So, we’ve been over this before, and we’re going to go over it once.” Standing her guard, Santana gripped the edge of the table, almost unconsciously puffing out her chest to showcase her strength and how much Caleb’s glares were ineffective against her. She wasn’t scared of a punch or two, not that she figured Caleb would be stupid enough to do so.
Allowing their eyes to lock, Santana stayed firmly planted, voice low as she was well aware of the waiters practically dodging them and gauging for any sort of gossip. “This was never about me, and it’s never going to be about me, Caleb.” Santana spat out his name with an almost anger, one that even surprised herself. She had never hated Caleb. Maybe found him a tad on the more rambunctious side, a little bit wary of his constant gushing, but he was Brittany’s friend. It was hard to dislike one of Brittany’s friends when Brittany had some sort of equal opportunity love for all of them. Though Santana took pride in the fact that, yeah, Brittany did kind of love her just a little bit more.
“It’s about you, and the fact that you left people who actually love you. I don’t know what the hell happened with you and Quinn, but I do know that you broke her. You broke her and Brittany. You broke both my girls, and that’s one of the biggest mistakes you could ever make in your life.” Venom spewing with every inch, Santana went in for the final punch. Words of generosity got you nowhere, and Santana was a Slytherin to the very tee. She knew manipulation, and knew very well how much guilt was an added factor to any win. “Why don’t you get your head out of your ass and realize that there’s people at Hogwarts—people like Brittany, Quinn, Mike and—” Santana didn’t know much about Caleb to be honest, but from what Brittany had heard, he was sensitive. Yeah, manipulation could get you so far, and while Santana did count this next act as manipulation, she could also consider it something as close to nice as she would ever get to someone who wasn’t Brittany, “on very rare occasions, people like me miss your goofy ass back at school wearing that blue and silver tie.” Santana’s hand fanned up into the air, waving her fingers so that the bartender could come and finally take her cup. “So put that into perspective, and tell me—tell me right now, that you don’t miss them too. Tell me that you don’t miss them and I’ll let you go. I’ll let you live your cheery mundane life with the muggles.”
Caleb simply rolled his eyes as Santana spoke. He knew she wanted something and was dancing around the point. He looked her up and down then laughed ” It was never about you?” he said mocking her.” But I though everything was about you Santana Lopez. If your girls are broken then you fix them.” Whatever Santana was trying to pull, Caleb wasn’t impressed. He looked around the room to make sure his tables were covered before turning back to glare at Santana. With the exception of the last time they spoke, Caleb had never been rude or mean to Santana. As far back as he remembered, she seemed to have some grudge against him for reasons unknown. He never understood what he did to make her hate him so much. He used to think that she was just that way but he had seen her interact with other people in a friendly way and knew that Brittany would never be friends with someone that evil. He cursed himself mentally for all the years he spent trying to befriend her. His time away made him realize that she was as much of a lost cause as he was.
Caleb’s blood began to boil the more he listened to Santana. He was almost insulted that she thought he was stupid enough to believe her lies and even more insulted that she was call him away from his work to lie right to his face.” Look, as far as I’m concerned, your girlfriend your problem. Nobody there wants me you said so yourself. I thought Mike was Brittany’s best friend? I thought Quinn was better off without me? I thought that it would be better if I just left. What happened to that, huh? No one wanted me, you said so yourself. And now your coming here to tell me that all of an sudden that changed and now everybody wants me? You might be a good witch, but I don’t believe in magic anymore.” Caleb liked watching Santana squirm. He liked that he got under her skin but in the end, he knew himself better than anyone and he knew that he deserved better than to have his emotions played with by anyone. It almost pained him to say it but he couldn’t be bothered with that life anymore. He just wanted her to say what she needed and leave. Santana was vicious and Caleb gave up trying to please her. If he couldn’t respect himself no one else would.
Caleb stood up and smoothed his clothes. “Look Santana.” he began, her name burned his tongue. It was as if he would explode. “You don’t even like me. Why would you bother? Why not just go out, come back and tell Brittany that you couldn’t find me why even talk to me? you hate me so much then why don’t you just go back without me? If you really don’t care, march your cute little ass back to your table, eat and leave. I don’t know what tricks your up to or what you want but I’m done with you and that life. Why not go and use you perfection to make everyone feel better and forget about me? Just go home. I don’t miss anyone so there. Good bye.” Caleb said. He walked outside to get fresh air, leaving Santana behind him. It was all a lie. Some sick joke someone wanted to play on him. He pushed open the door and stormed out to the sidewalk, taking a deep breath. His hands felt around his pockets, looking for his phone to call his girlfriend. “Shit.” he said as he realized he left it inside his locker. He leaned his head against the wall and closed his eyes.
To have his past thrown in his face just as his life had turned around felt like a gunshot to his heart. Had Santana really come all this way just to blame him for everything? Caleb knew he made mistakes but to have her here telling him that it was all his fault enraged him. Caleb felt his face get warm as the fury raged within him. He clutched his head as the thoughts he had worked so hard to bury came flooding into his mind all at once. Quinn’s smile, Brittany’s laughter, joking around with Mike. The good memories attacked him as well as the bad. When he fought with Connor, Quinn, Mike. When he lost everything. His father yelled at him in his head, called him a failure, a loser, a disgrace. Tears spilled out of Caleb’s eyes without permission and he felt a click in his head. He turned around swiftly and punched the brick wall behind him, breaking the skin on his knuckles and exposing the blood that now spilled down his hand. “Fuck.” Caleb’s heart was racing and his head was spinning. He clenched his jaw as he looked down at his bloody hand, getting lost in his feelings.
Harmony watched as Caleb put the bottle away. “Of course not. I don’t want to go telling you everything, now. You’re not ready for that.” She had a lot more problems than she was willing to admit, but she kept them all inside. She hadn’t really talked to anyone before the second half of sixth year, and while she did regret it a bit, she was thankful for it. She had managed to stay out of drama and avoid running into even more problems. Harmony took a look down at her shot glass again and set it down on the desk as Caleb plopped down on his bed. He wanted to more about her? She didn’t really know what to say. “Well… you already know that I’m adopted, that I’m actually a pure blood, and that my adoptive parents are muggle stage actors. Let’s see…” she paused. What could she tell him? She never told anyone anything. “I have no clue who my real parents are besides the fact that I know they were both pureblooded Slytherins and one of them played Quidditch.” Better to start off with the family stuff. There was a lot of it. “My parents have my life planned out and really don’t want me deviating from their plan too much.”
She thought about what else she could say while she fiddled with the edge of her skirt, playing with the pleats. “I’m actually fine with being a stage actress. I love the theatre and everything, I just wish that I got a say in it.” She relaxed a bit in her chair and continued speaking. “I also have a problem with perfection. I feel this need to try and be perfect all the time, especially because I’m adopted. I just want my parents to feel like they made the right decision and that I was… worth it, I guess.” Harmony had never said any of this to anyone, but she felt a whole lot better after having said it aloud. “I don’t want to screw up and disappoint them because they could have had any child. If I screw up it’s like I’m not even worth the trouble” she said plainly. She hadn’t even realized that she had thought about that so much but she discovered that it had been in the back of her mind for a while. She didn’t really know what else to say about her family so she looked at Caleb, trying to figure out if she should ask him to talk about himself. “I don’t know much about you. What about you? I think it’s time we took a break from talk about my family.”
Caleb listen to harmony as he rested. Though Harmony claimed to love acting, he could help but feel like she wanted more. She soon confirmed his thoughts. Just like Caleb, Harmony had pushy parents but unlike him, she wanted to please them. Caleb didn’t know what that feeling was like, he always wanted to do the exact opposite of what his parents wanted. Maybe she had nice parents? Either way, as much as he wanted to tell her that she should tell her parents to get bent, he knew it wasn’t his place. They barely knew each other and the last thing he wanted to do was insult her parents. So he kept his mouth shut and let the booze sink in. It was sad in a way. She felt like she would never live up to their expectations, almost everyone here did but he couldn’t imagine what giving a shit about his parents felt like.
“My parents are dicks” Caleb said simply in response to Harmony’s question. Clearly she didn’t like talking about her family life. As much as she wanted to be perfect, she needed to relax more. Being perfect was something that no one could achieve and sooner she figured that out the happier she’d be. Caleb laughed out loud at the thought of perfection. Could anybody really be the prefect child to their parents and still be happy? Caleb had a feeling Harmony was going to try till her last breath. ” My dad likes to boss people around and make money and my mom likes to look down on people and spend money. There really isn’t that much to them. They are shallow and evil people. The worst you’ll ever meet. That’s probably why I’m so used to dealing with mean people. I grew up dealing with them you know?” Caleb’s family life wasn’t the greatest. As an only child, him family wanted him to be everything her wasn’t. He doubt they even remembered they had a son. They hadn’t contacted him in months. Caleb didn’t mind though, he was beginning to get used to the lack of attention. ” That’s it basically. So why do you always stay in you room all the time?” Caleb asked. He wasn’t thinking about how nosy he was becoming anymore.

You should feel horrible.
Charlie you have no idea what you’re putting me and Quinn through right now. I literally want to kill you.
Charlie…
Sorry isn’t good enough. I made a huge mistake. I’m telling Quinn and we are coming to get now.
No, Charlie this is not what we agreed on. I can’t…
I can’t believe I agreed to do this.
